Park Bench to Poolwerx – How this Franchisee Beat the Odds
At the young age of five, Stephen was adopted by his 80-year-old grandfather, who raised Stephen in an extremely strict and old-fashioned manner, even requiring him to wear a suit and tie every night to dinner, a tradition he still follows today.
Fast-forward nine years, at the age of 14, Stephen’s grandfather passed away, leaving Stephen homeless and sleeping on a park bench. Although unfortunate, this tragedy sparked Stephen’s entrepreneurial spirit, leading him to start his own landscaping business, which he later sold at the age of 17 for $300,000. By the time Stephen was fifteen, through the help of a friend’s father, Stephen was able to buy his first apartment.
After serving in the military, graduating from high school and receiving his Masters in chemistry, Stephen went on to start his own business in the pool industry. In the midst of his thriving business, Stephen heard of an international pool maintenance company making strides in the U.S – Poolwerx. In a fit of rage, Stephen vowed to take down the company looking to shake up his industry. Upon further investigating, such as demanding a meeting with the Founder of Poolwerx, John O’Brien, Stephen fell in love with brand – so much so he joined the Poolwerx team after converting his own local business into a Poolwerx franchise.
Not only does Stephen have a passion for the pool industry, but a passion for water safety in general. In 2012, Stephen founded The Swim to Win Foundation, an organization with the goal of teaching every child in the U.S how to swim.
