General FAQs

How long has Poolwerx been in business?

Poolwerx was founded in Australia in 1992. Since then, we’ve spread across the globe to New Zealand — and most recently — the United States. Our first US Franchise Partners opened their doors in 2015, overseen by our dedicated CEO, John O’Brien, who now splits his time between the US and Australia.

What are the typical operating hours for a Poolwerx service vehicle or retail store franchise?

Hours vary by location, although we are typically open 7 days a week once the business expands into retail. We are generally open 7 days per week but this doesn’t mean that you are working 7 days per week. The business will be open and staff would typically be running the store in your absence. It’s up to you how you manage the roster, but Sundays are usually the second busiest day of the week.

Why do you call your franchisees "Franchise Partners"?

We call our franchisees “Franchise Partners” because this term aligns with the value we place on all our Franchise Partners. It’s also a verbal and written expression of how we see ourselves as a franchise. Your success is our success, so we work together with you like anyone who was a partner in your business would do.

As a partner in your business, we provide extensive marketing support, competitive buying power, ongoing training, business development coaching, remote support and much, much more.

Do I need any previous business or pool cleaning experience?

Not at all! Our initial Pool School training program gives you all the training you need for both the technical and business side of being a Poolwerx Franchise Partner. In addition to your Pool School experience, we also offer ongoing training and support to you and any staff you bring with you or hire along the way.

How many locations do you have?

As of January 2018, we have 31 retail stores and 140 service trucks throughout the US. Globally, we have almost 150 retail locations and a substantial mobile service fleet – and we’re still growing!

What type of training does Poolwerx provide?

We provide thorough initial and ongoing training to help you grow, develop and succeed in your Poolwerx business. Your initial training via our Pool School will equip you with all the technical and business knowledge you need to run a successful Poolwerx business, while our continuing education programs will keep you at the top of your game and ensure all your staff are on the same page. At the end of your Pool School, you will be CPO accredited, which is a nationally recognized qualification.

For how long do Poolwerx franchise agreements last?

Our franchise agreements last for a total of 15 years, consisting of three 5-year terms.

How big will my assigned franchise area be?

Poolwerx territories are built from a combination of US zip codes and swimming pool data. A territory is determined by combining sufficient zip codes to ensure that there are sufficient pools within that territory to operate a successful business.

Joining Poolwerx with Your Business FAQs

I already run a successful pool retail store and/or mobile pool servicing business. What would Poolwerx provide that I don't already have?

Converting your business to the Poolwerx brand means opening the door to a range of exciting opportunities outside the reach of most independent operators. This includes improved marketing, real buying power with our suppliers, shared resources for extensive business and IT support and systems, business training and coaching, and more.

For marketing, Poolwerx provides economies of scale, with a managed platform to handle digital marketing channels including social media and SEO, so you don’t have to. Add to that a full-time marketing manager, hundreds of ready-made marketing materials on our website, and even the ability to customize marketing pieces and strategies to suit your local market – all with our support. Because we’re a global brand, you can take advantage of our buying power to enjoy industry best pricing and fantastic terms with our suppliers. Our support staff are always available to assist you with business and IT issues, while you’ll also enjoy access to tried and tested industry best practice platforms and systems that would never be cost effective for businesses out on their own. Poolwerx also provides a full-time regional Business Development Manager (BDM) who’s on-hand to provide you with coaching, business planning, meeting your KPIs and treading a tried and true path to growth. Plus, there’s ongoing training support for you and your staff, commercial support staff building relationships with commercial clients on your behalf, a network of fellow Franchise Partners that are always willing to help you out, and support that’s never more than a phone call away.

All this means you’re supported to grow, develop and flourish in ways that are often out of reach when you’re in business by yourself. If that sounds like the sort of opportunity you’re looking for, we want to hear from you.

I want to join Poolwerx with my existing business. How much will it cost me to join Poolwerx?

Poolwerx has developed a conversion program for joining our brand that takes into account your existing business. It’s basically a sliding scale based on your length of experience and the size of your business. Generally speaking, Poolwerx will only charge you for the hard costs involved in bringing your business on board. This may include training costs, legal fees, initial marketing etc. Poolwerx will waive your territory fee based on the assumption that you will be opening a retail store somewhere in your territory(s).

As with any re-branding exercise, there may be some additional costs that are not paid to Poolwerx. These will vary in every instance.

I currently run a mobile pool servicing business. Do I have to open a retail store? If so, what help does Poolwerx provide in that process?

Many of our Franchise Partners start out with a mobile service truck or fleet of trucks before expanding their businesses further. Unless you want to, we don’t expect you to open a retail store at the beginning of your Poolwerx journey. However, with more than 25 years’ experience supporting Franchise Partners across three countries, we’ve seen time and time again the value of opening up a retail location inside your assigned franchise territory(s). As such, we encourage you to consider this step when the time is right.

Operating out of a retail store provides you with the credibility to really scale your business up and increase your market share, as your ability to gain market share in service and maintenance is raised exponentially from operating a brick and mortar location.

Poolwerx currently provides Franchise Partners with a grant to help you open your retail location. Both Poolwerx and our suppliers will invest a substantial amount of money to help you get your store open. As part of this journey, we will take you through our stringent site selection process, which has been refined over our years of operation and experience opening almost 150 retail locations. Your Business Development Manager will work with proprietary resources to find the best locations by analyzing traffic patterns, competitive locations, and pool density to make sure you are best positioned for success.

Opening a New Franchise FAQs

Why should I join a pool industry franchise rather than a franchise in another industry, such as the restaurant industry?

First off, while there are certainly a number of pool companies across the US, you’ll still be in a less crowded space with lots of opportunity. While other industries, such as restaurants are crowded with countless brands, there are only a handful of national pool brands.

Furthermore, the Poolwerx Franchise Partner lifestyle is very different to a number of other industries. Like any business owner, you’ll work hard, but you won’t be open on nights, and as an added bonus, you won’t be as busy during the winter vacation period.

Finally, a further benefit of joining the pool industry is the initial investment. We offer several initial investment levels to suit your needs, situation and preferences. Many of our Franchise Partners start off with mobile-only operations and choose to open a retail store only once their business is established. This helps to keep your initial costs much lower than many other franchise opportunities in other industries.

There are a LOT of pool companies in my market. How can I possibly compete?

It’s true that there are more than 8,000 small pool companies across the US. Unfortunately, however, the level of professionalism in the pool industry is not particularly high. As a Poolwerx Franchise Partner, your business will stand out from the crowd with its professionalism. You and your entire technical staff will receive excellent training, industry certifications, state-of-the-art technology, uniforms and professionally branded vehicles. Very few competing pool maintenance companies in your market can match that level of support.

How much does it cost to open a new Poolwerx franchise?

The cost of opening a new Poolwerx franchise will vary depending on whether you are starting with a single service truck, a fleet of trucks, and/or a retail store.

For a new single truck franchise, applicants can get started for as little as $100k including the cost of the vehicle. Call us to find out more about the multiple entry points and the costs associated with each of these entry points.

Will I need to employ staff straight away?

No. You can start your journey as a Poolwerx Franchise Partner as an owner-operator with a single mobile service truck. As your business grows and expands, you will have the opportunity to hire staff for additional trucks and eventually for a retail store. All of your service technicians and retail staff will receive training from our Poolwerx support staff to ensure they’re up to scratch and can represent you and the Poolwerx brand.

Buying an Existing Franchise FAQs

Why should I buy a pool industry franchise business rather than a franchise business in another industry such as the restaurant industry?

First off, while there are certainly a number of pool companies across the USA, you’ll still be in a less crowded space with lots of opportunity. While other industries such as restaurants are crowded with countless brands, there are only a handful of national pool brands.

Like any business owner, you’ll work hard, but you won’t be open on nights, and as an added bonus, you won’t be as busy during the winter vacation period. You’ll also have lower overheads than many other franchise businesses.

If working with Poolwerx is so great, why are the current owners selling?

Many of our Franchise Partners prepare their businesses for sale because they’re ready to retire. Others have built their business up from their early days as an owner-operator with a single mobile service truck and are ready to cash-in on their successful business like they always planned from the beginning. We’re confident that all of them will speak glowingly of their time with Poolwerx, so feel free to ask them yourself!

We also have a number of business owners who are ready to sell their pool businesses and who choose to join the Poolwerx brand before they sell in order to add substantial value to their business.
