Own a pool? This tip could save you thousands. Did you know your pool pump could be costing you an extra $561 each year? The upfront cost of a swimming pool pump represents just 20% of the total cost of an average pump. Ongoing electricity costs making up the other 80%. These costs never go away! Your pool pump can be the largest user of electricity in your home, increasing your electric bill by up to $1,800 each year. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, switching to a variable-speed pool pump can reduce pool pump energy use by 50% to 75%. For a relatively small upfront investment, you can save an average of $561 of that added electricity cost every year. That adds up to thousands saved over your pool pump's lifetime! Why pool pumps are important A pool pump is essential to the cleanliness of your pool, performing several water circulation duties. The pool pump's primary goal is to circulate water through the filtration system. But it has other tasks, including powering spa jets, backwashing the filter, operating a chlorinator, providing water for the pool sweeper, circulating water through the heater, initiating flow to a solar panel and pumping water to waterfalls and other water features. These occasional tasks require extra energy on top of what they need for the circulation of pool water through the filtration system. Single-speed vs variable-speed pool pumps Most single-speed pool pumps consume an excessive amount of electricity. Why? Because they are typically oversized and overused when operating the pool. By design, single-speed pumps can’t change their flow rate so they are oversized to perform the most demanding task. These pumps traditionally have a 1- or 2-horsepower motor that will run at least five to six hours per day, if not around the clock, consuming energy. A variable-speed pool pump, on the other hand, is able to program and reduce the flow rate to match the required pumping task. A single-speed pump will operate at maximum flow rate even for tasks that require minimum flow rates. In contrast, the variable speed pump can be slowed down to the optimal level. This balances flow rate needs with energy use. This means it can perform tasks just as well as the single-speed, but with significantly less energy usage, saving you money! According to the Consortium for Energy Efficiency, approximately two-thirds of pool pump sales are estimated to be single speed pumps, with the main factor in the decision process for those buying a new pump being the upfront cost of the unit. Pool contractors often install single speed pumps because they aren't aware of how more advanced equipment can save on energy costs in the long run. Sometimes, they don’t know how to install these less common but more efficient pool pumps. The best way to save Poolwerx has the pool pump options to save you money and knowledgeable technicians to install it for you. Not only that, but we are now offering interest free payment plans when you buy an energy efficient pump! What are you waiting for? Time to dive into year-round savings! New Year, New Pool: How to make your pool look good as new Do you have a New Year's Resolution of tidying up your home, or improving the look of your pool? Poolwerx has your back with a list of tips to make your pool look good as new for the new year.   1. Look into Pool Resurfacing One thing you can do to dramatically change the look of your pool is to resurface it. Have a plaster pool? If your pool is starting to look and feel a bit rough, it’s probably time to re-plaster. Standard pool plaster can usually last anywhere from 8 to 12 years. After that, you likely need to re-do the plaster. Another option to give your pool a makeover is to upgrade your pool tile. Whether you’re looking for a contemporary blue glass tile with a glossy finish to complement the blue water of your pool, or possibly the more natural & earthy appearance of stone tiles, Poolwerx can meet your needs. 2. New pool coping Coping is the edge around your swimming pool wall. Today’s high end pools are treated to an upscale coping of thick natural stone. This coping can be irregular to blend nicely with flagstone decking, adapting well to the irregular edges of natural pools and integrating nicely with rocks and boulders. We also offer brick coping for people wanting a more traditional look for their pool. The key is to choose a coping material finished in a way that is most compatible with the decking material. 3. New pool decking Your pool deck is not only the backdrop for the entire pool but the immediate area around your swimming pool. This is also often called your pool patio, and is where most family members and friends spend the majority of their time lounging on lounge chairs or sitting by the pool. When deciding on what coping you want, you have many different options. Different styles include Cantilever Concrete, Bullnose, Rolled Edge, Precast Coping, Custom Stone and more. You also will need to determine what kind of material you would like. Read more about this here! 4. Patio Decor Improvements Adding a new awning or shade structure will not only add more interest to the look of your backyard, but will give you the gift of much-needed shade in the hot summer months. Ordering some new loungers, coordinating outdoor sofas, chairs, or other poolside accessories will make your pool look more inviting. 5. Add a Water Feature There are so many possibilities when it comes to swimming pool water features! Water features can tie together your indoor or outdoor environment to the surrounding landscape and really make it feel like home. The addition of features such as a spillover, fountain or waterfall will certainly class up your pool.
5 Tips for Cold Weather Pool Maintenance Cold Weather Pool Maintenance is Important... Here's Why The weather is getting colder... that means you can forget about maintaining the pool until next summer, right? Not quite. But if you’re not using your pool, why do you need to worry about it? A neglected pool is a prime breeding ground for harmful bacteria that could lead to outbreaks of illness. Possible complications include respiratory problems as well as gastro, skin, ear or eye infections! Your pool might look clean and clear right now, but after a few months of little or no monitoring, most likely... it won't be. You may think that because the pool is not being used as much in cold weather, it doesn’t need as much cleaning. But unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for harmful bacteria and germs to grow. Still not sure on why cold weather pool maintenance is important? Take a look at what the CDC says on the importance of regular pool cleaning: "The best way to kill germs is by properly maintaining the free chlorine concentration and pH. To do this, pool and hot tub/spa owners must routinely test and adjust both the free chlorine concentration and pH... Combining good chlorine and pH control and encouraging swimmers to follow the healthy swimming steps will help prevent the spread of germs that cause recreational water illnesses." It hurts your wallet, too If you decide to not test your pool, it can cost you considerably, both with your health and your wallet! After winter, once the weather starts to warm up, the results of your neglect can really add up. You can find yourself shelling out for extra chemicals and replacement parts for neglected filter and pump systems, or having to fix a pool that has turned green. The good news is that you can avoid all this by simply keeping up a regular pool maintenance schedule throughout the winter season. How to Maintain your Pool in the Winter Reduce pool pump operation time to up to 6 hours and switch timer onto an off-peak tariff. Install a pool cover to reduce evaporation, chemical usage and protect your pool from fallen leaves. Ensure chlorine levels and pH levels are in a healthy range through regular water testing and maintenance. This will make life easier when spring arrives. Thoroughly clean your skimmers, filters and pool cleaning equipment. These items can be hiding bacteria. Clear the skimmer basket and remove debris from the pool's surface every week.
