How to keep leaves out of your pool this fall

As the fall season begins, leaves start to fall into your pool. For that reason, pool maintenance is key to keep your pool healthy going into the cooler months. Leaves are probably the biggest issue when it comes to pools in autumn. Not only are they unsightly, but they can clog your filters. Or worse, they can stain your pool if you let them collect. Here we have put together some helpful tips on how to keep your pool free of leaves.

Invest in a leaf pool cover

Covering your pool with a leaf cover is one of the most effective ways to keep leaves and debris from getting into your pool. A leaf cover is made from mesh, fits entirely over the pool and is secured around the pool with straps and fittings. It can be used on its own or on top of a solar cover. If you use one on top of a solar cover, it makes cleanup a lot easier. But if you use it on its own, you can easily collect leaves before they get into your water.

Use a leaf rake

A leaf rake is an inexpensive and easy to use tool to remove leaves from your pool. It has a deep bag-like net instead of a flat net. This allows it to hold much more leaves with each scoop. Also, a leaf rake allows the water to pass through much easier when it has leaves in it than a leaf skimmer does. Remember to regularly scoop your pool to help reduce the rate of algae growth and to keep your pool looking clearer and healthier.

Clean the filter

Keep an eye on your filter. Your pool might be getting less use during the fall, but remember those leaves we just mentioned? They can prevent filters from properly doing their job. Check your traps, watch those filters and be sure to empty your skimmer baskets and pump basket regularly.

Use a robotic pool cleaner

A robotic pool cleaner cleans the pool floor automatically by picking up dirt and leaves. There is also a brush on the bottom that scrubs the pool in order to get a deeper clean and free the pool from caked on dirt. The robotic pool cleaner is able to clean your pool faster and more effectively as it has advanced computer technology which actually maps out the surface of your pool, ensuring it doesn’t miss any spots and doesn’t get stuck in the corners.
